PLAY BALL! ARIZONA SPRING TRAINING IS IN FULL SWING
There’s nothing like the smell of fresh cut green grass on a baseball field. Now imagine a picturesque Arizona spring day as you experience great local eats and cheap seats at a quaint neighborhood ballpark, some of the best people-watching this side of Vegas, and maybe skipping half a day of work? When you put all these together, you get the cherished and timeless tradition of spring training baseball, “Arizona style”.
For some of us, memories of our childhood and playing catch with dad are just a couple of things that come back to us when we hear those four words “pitchers and catchers report”. Every year in late February baseball fans, tourists, and locals of all ages flock to the valley of the sun for spring training baseball. Arizona welcomes the throngs of Midwesterners and other “cold-weather” visitors, along with Californians, and people from all over for this annual ritual that lasts a little over a month.
About half of all Major league baseball teams call Arizona their spring training home. The Cactus League is one of only two spring training leagues for Major League Baseball, with the Grapefruit League in Florida being the other. The Cactus League consists of 15 teams that play in 10 different stadiums that are hosted by 8 different cities throughout the Phoenix Metro area. One of the biggest selling points for the fans is proximity, as all spring training stadiums are within a 45 minute drive (or less) of each other. All 10 stadiums are unique and have their own eclectic experiences and stories to share to the spectator. It’s not uncommon for a baseball fan to visit each of the stadiums during their stay in Arizona for spring training.
Last year, record attendance and ticket sales helped to generate over $540 Million in revenue for the state’s economy during spring training games and related events. Over the past few years spring training in Arizona has elevated and evolved from a cute and ordinary spring day activity, to a massive and reliable economic success. A Hip and trendy way to spend the day mixed with the tradition and history of America’s past-time, make attending a spring training game as popular as ever.
Of course, there’s more than just baseball during Arizona spring training. The greater Phoenix area has everything that a true American city has to offer. The cities hosting spring training offer a variety of endless cultural events, concerts, and outdoor activities. With expected sunshine and ideal weather during spring training, you’ll also find exceptional golfing, hiking, and even horseback riding all over the Phoenix area. There is also no shortage of world class dining and shopping to be discovered within the Phoenix city limits. From high-end restaurants, retailers and boutiques to the local foodie favorites and outlet stores, you won’t be disappointed.
